A Crossroads for the High-Speed Rail City Chicago Architectural Club Burnham Prize
The Chicago Architectural Club and the Chicago Humanities Festival announce UNION STATION 2020, an international design ideas competition for the conversion of Chicago’s Union Station into a high-speed rail hub, regional market, and meeting place. This year’s Burnham Prize competition forms part of Burnham 2.0: A Patchwork Plan for Chicago, a composite urban plan that marks the centennial of Burnham and Bennett’s Plan of Chicago. UNION STATION 2020 asks for innovative solutions for the transformation of Union Station into a center of high speed rail traffic and related programs. It is not simply a question of designing an efficient and functional transit hub. How can this intermodal node become more than a mere knot of infrastructure? What role can this project play in the reconfiguration of Chicago’s West Loop and of the city and region? How can an existing landmark building be transformed to accommodate and generate a new combination of activities while welcoming an unprecedented level of rail traffic? How can we leverage infrastructure to produce other results, to shape the city and the public sphere? How can a point of exchange generate a regional culture? And what does ‘culture’ mean, anyway?

Qualified entrants in this year's exciting challenge will compete in one of two categories: student and general/open. The general/open competition is for design engineers, hobbyists, inventors and anyone else who is not a full-time student. Designs will be judged only against designs submitted within the same category.
Live EDGE's design requirements for submission are intentionally broad, so as to open the challenge to the widest range of ideas. To enter, your design must be original and innovative, use electric and/or electronic components, and positively impact the environment, such as by increasing energy efficiency or reducing carbon emissions. It is helpful to view a sample entry (pdf 286Kb) and the winning designs from 2007.
Live EDGE competition to create a design for the most innovative product that utilises electronic components and will have a significant positive effect on the environment
You can register your design on the website between October 1, 2008 and January 31, 2009, following the entry process. Winners will be announced in March, 2009.
The rewards of Live EDGE are unique. The challenge not only awards each of the two winners with a $25,000 cash prize, it provides for support services to bring the designs to market, valued at an additional $25,000 each. Six runner-ups will also receive $5,000 each. All Intellectual Property rights remain with the entrants, so two winners will enjoy the rare pleasure of seeing their designs become a reality, all commercial benefits, and the satisfaction of helping the environment.
- Which competition should I register for?
- What important dates do I need to know?
For the 2008 challenge, Live EDGE will hold two concurrent competitions. Designs from full-time students will compete only with other student designs. Professional design engineers, hobbyists and anyone else will compete in the general/open competition.
Registration/submission of designs begins October 1, 2008 and extends through January 31, 2009

The WORLD Space Creators Awards ask design professionals and students to envision a new concept in shop style, a venue conceived to promote “customer-to-shop interaction”.
Winning designers to be commissioned to be part of a team to use their winning design in a project for real retail space development.
The WORLD Space Creators Awards are given through an open competition that aims not only to discover talented designers from around the world but also to realize their ideas by actually developing winning entries into an actual interior. Entrants can submit nearly any kind of concept that helps to define a shop interior, from overall interior design concept to various shop tools including window or interior displays, mannequins, logos and signs. With the only assumption that submissions will be physically possible to create, we hope participants will allow their imaginations to run freely in creating an idea for their submission.
* This competition is open to professional as well as non-professional entrants of all nationalities and ages.
* Entries may also be made by groups or companies, in which case an individual from that group or company should be named as the entrant.
*Entry forms will be available on the website starting from 10 January 2008.

Opening: Thursday, January 10, 2008
Closing: Thursday, January 31, 2008
